Is Your Beaverton Hot Tub Leaking? Hot Tub Leak Checker and Cost Calculator

Beaverton hot tubs lose water to evaporation year-round -- especially in winter when cold air and hot water create maximum surface evaporation. The bucket test separates normal evaporation from a real leak in 24 hours.

The three most common hot tub leak sources are the pump, the jet fittings, and the shell seal. This tool runs the bucket test math for you and estimates the cost of your leak on real TVWD rates. If the tub drains to the sewer system and leaks run during November through April, the extra water use may also raise your Clean Water Services winter average.

How to Run the Bucket Test

  1. Note the current water level in the hot tub and mark it with tape.
  2. Place a small container of hot tub water on the spa lip or step at the same air and temperature exposure. Mark the container level.
  3. Run the jets on your normal schedule. Do not add water. Wait 24 hours.
  4. Measure how much the tub level dropped versus how much the container dropped.
  5. Enter both measurements below to see the result.

No leak detected

Your control container dropped 0 inches -- that is estimated natural evaporation for your conditions. Your hot tub dropped 0 inches more than the container.

The 3 Most Common Beaverton Hot Tub Leak Sources

1

Pump and equipment housing. Fittings and union connections on the pump weaken over time with heat cycling and chemical exposure. Look for wet spots, white mineral deposits, or drips on the equipment pad when the jets are running.

2

Jet fittings. The rubber gaskets behind jet bodies deteriorate with chlorine and bromine exposure. A jet that rotates stiffly or has recently felt loose may have a failed gasket allowing water into the cabinet behind the shell.

3

Shell seal at the waterline. The bond between the acrylic shell and the cabinet or skirting can crack after Oregon freeze-thaw cycles. Run your hand along the waterline seam when the water level is low to check for gaps or soft spots.
